You want to push your weight through your heels and not transfer your weight to your toes or ball of your foot. The exception to this is the leg in the back or side on lunges. Putting your weight on your toes or ball of your foot (a very common error BTW) puts a lot of stress on the knee joint potentially causing damage and/or injury.
