Feeling bloated and just plain unhealthy? Then try this detox smoothie recipe concocted for the book Ancient Remedies. Loaded with vitamin A and K, both help inflammation in our bodies through fighting free radical damage.

This detox smoothie also follows Ayurvedic principles and uses ingredients that are partially cooked in order to help create “digestive fire” and “enhance immunity, happiness, and strength.”

Detoxifying Ingredients

Carrots

Loaded with beta-carotene, carrots are crucial for improving immunity in the body, protecting skin and eye health, and fighting free radical damage that can cause various forms of chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease.

Eating cooked carrots in addition to raw types used in carrot juice is also important. Some research has found that cooked carrots may have higher antioxidant activity than raw ones.

Apple

Apple nutrition benefits include the ability to improve your digestion, thanks to being one of best high-fiber foods. Apples are also a top source of pectin, a soluble, gelatinous polysaccharide that binds to cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract and slows glucose absorption.

In Ayurvedic medicine, stewed/cooked apples are recommended to prevent constipation. Apples are considered helpful for balancing Kapha energy. In other words, they help relieve sluggishness, weight gain, blocked sinuses, allergies and colds.

Spinach

Spinach nutrition has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities, and if you combine that with its very low amount of calories, it is easily one of the most nutrient-rich foods in existence.

Matcha Green Tea

Unlike other types of tea, matcha contains the entire tea leaves, providing a more concentrated source of nutrients. It also has a strong, distinct flavor, which many compare to spinach or wheat grass.

The secret behind matcha’s super strength is found in its polyphenol compounds called catechins, which are a type of antioxidant found in superfoods like green tea, cocoa and apples.

Valued for being more catechin-dense than most foods, the health benefits of matcha generally arrive for those who regularly drink it. Potential benefits range from improved heart health to lower blood sugar levels, increased weight loss and beyond.

How to Make a Detox Smoothie

First, steam the carrots and apples for 10 minutes. Then rinse them with cold water to cool down.

Next, combine all the ingredients in a high-speed blender.

Simply blend it all together until it creates a smooth texture. Add water to lessen the thickness if desired.

That’s it!

Dr Axe, what do you have to advice about oxalates. I see they get talked about and I know that healthy foods such as almonds and spinach have them.. Just curious.. Is it one of those things that some body chemistries will be affected and others are not.
